Nic and Cathy Support Ski Cross in 2012

Both Cathy and Nic travelled with the Australian Ski Cross team in the beginning of 2012. The 2011/2012 Ski Cross season was an eventful and successful one for the Australian team. The season ended with Australian athlete, Sami Kennedy (Sim) finishing the season in ranked in 11th place on the World Cup standings. It was a pleasure for Nic and Cathy to work with Sami Kennedy, Katya Krema, Jenny Owens, Anton Grimus and Scott Kneller. All of the Aussie athletes show great professionalism, dedication to their sport and promise for next season which is the Olympic selection period pre Sochi, Russia 2014. There is much talk about the 2014 venue and course and all are looking forward to getting there next season for the first world cup.
Whilst travelling with the team most days started early with warm up and course inspection, training or competition and then warm down which often involved stretching and Pilates sessions, bike and physiotherapy treatment. After each day, there was usually a team meeting which included analysis and discussion of video of the days training or competition.
The job as a physio with the team was varied and interesting for Cathy and Nic and could include anything from hands on physiotherapy duties, transporting race and training skis from one end of the course to the other, assisting the athletes with preparation on course, course information update assistance to the coaching staff and a myriad of other duties. All duties maximise athlete performance.
The season finished on a sad note with Canadian Ski Cross athlete's Nik Zoricic's tragic passing at the final event in Grindelwald after a horrible crash. It was amazing and touching to see all the World Cup athletes from all teams pay there respects to Nik who was a well respected and much loved member of the international Ski Cross family. It was very special to be a part of the Ski Cross community at this time, a community who can be fiercely competitive on course but best of friends as soon as they are off the race course. On a nice note all those involved with the World Cup at Grindelwald skied a tribute run down the race course in their jeans to pay their respect to Nik who raced his first world Cup event in jeans.
